Multi Temple Necklace in Sapphire
Handcarved ebony, lemon quartz set in 24ct yellow gold, handcarved ebony, black spinel, sapphire & 18ct yellow gold beads.
The handcarved ebony pieces are usually created by master-craftsmen in Jaipur as templates or maquettes for clients at the beginning of the process of commissioning 24ct gold work; later discarded. Whilst there is a tradition of ebony jewellery in India, it occupies the disposable end of the market, despite the fine quality of the carving and ebony’s status as an endangered wood. The Temple collection re-evaluates these ebony maquettes by creating lasting, fine quality pieces, combining the carving with 18ct yellow gold and precious stones.
Similarly to the Silk Route Shinkara Pendant (link this) the Multi Temple Necklace is a journey through motif and shape across the vast landscapes of this famous trade route from Northern China to Turkey. Juxtaposing incrementally different forms and patterns together encourages a new assessment of familiar, traditional motifs – the forms here are combinations of Syrian wine goblets, temple tops, the lotus bud on Krishna’s crown ... The Multi Temple series began as part of Alice’s first collection launched after her graduation from Central St Martins, the first piece created solely in ebony. Once sold, a new piece is made incorporating new stones and settings. Each piece comes in a museum archive box with a certificate of guarantee and is editioned to note its place in the series.
This piece is now sold. A new edition in the Multi Temple series is currently being made; please contact us for details.
