LANDSCAPE

The Landscape collection invites us to consider the value relationship between the natural miracle of stones, particularly the unique miniatures created in the earth that you find in landscape agates and rough diamonds, and the extraordinary skill and human endeavor that mastering a craft constitutes. In Landscape, Alice turns the traditional relationship between the stone and the meenakari enamel around, suggesting that this superlative craftsmanship is the true gem.

During her life as a curator and director of Arts & Culture in India, Alice had the privilege of working alongside some of the nation’s most inspiring craft & artisan entrepreneurs, such as Lalia Tyabji, Rajeev Sethi, Rta Kapur Chishti, and Faith & John Singh. It was Laila who shared with Alice her belief that, from dedicated research in India & China, the knowledge and understanding of a craft which goes untaught within a family over two generations (from grandfather to grandson) is then completely lost. Cumulatively, this atomization of craft communities has profound impact on the character and identity of place, as well as economic and cultural survival. For Alice these are profound questions of both sustainability and ethics.

These pieces are handmade in India in the studio of Kamal Kumar Meenakar. One of the last Jaipuri meenakari trained in the enamel traditions of Persia, his skills have been passed down through generations over 250 years. A family whose work has been exhibited the world over, his craftsmanship remains of superlative quality. The stone carvings by Bablu-ji, with whom Alice has also collaborated for over a decade, contains within it extraordinary flourishes too; carving a band and setting complete from a single piece of rough stone is a feat of master craftsmanship.
