The Kimono Pendant is given the same attention to detail on the back as the front. The reverse, carries the same intricacy of bird-motif lacquer enamel as the face, a detail typical of Alice Cicolini's approach to jewellery as something to be worn close and discovered, rather than simply viewed.
The pendant hangs from the Sari Lucknow chain, its enamelled links moving through a sequence of patterns and constructions, chevron, floral, striped, combined to build one continuous piece. Every element, down to the smallest link, has been considered as part of the whole.
Both pendant and chain grow from the Sari collection, though they arrive there by different routes entirely. The chain speaks in the language sari textiles have always spoken, of five yards of cloth carrying within their length a marker of region, of season, of the particular tradition a wearer's hands were trained in. The Kimono Pendant travels further afield, to Japan, where birds move across kimono silk carrying their own inherited symbolism, built up over centuries of repetition. Different countries, different cloths, and yet the impulse behind them is the same one that first shaped the Sari collection, that textiles have always been storytellers, that pattern is a kind of inheritance passed hand to hand. It's this idea, rather than any single motif, that the pendant carries forward.
